I purchased 2 3-tier wood shoe racks from Bed Bath & Beyond for $14.99. I decided not to pain them because I liked the natural wood look.
I got the idea from www.loandbeholdlife.com, I found her on pinterest. She makes her own version and sells them at a great price. So if you aren't the DIYer type you can buy them premade.
This is two of the shelves next to each other, I just stacked them on top of each other. Each wood rack comes with 3 shelves so you can make 3 wall car storage displays/art.

One unit is 3/4" wide, laying two up against each other makes it 1.5" wide, perfect for Hot wheels and a couple of other cars. Thomas the train doesn't fit very well between the slats, but do sit nicely on the top shelf Each wall unit holds about 50 cars inside and another 8-10 cars/trains on the top row. So total these three hold about 150-170 cars.

Hubby nailed the shelves together with his finishing gun. Then we layed
them out how we wanted them and screwed then into the wall using plastic wall anchors. The pre drilled holes made this easy. We did have to drill a hole on the top shelves.
When buying the shelves give check for any bends or curves in the slats. it makes it easier to line them up evenly.
We had a great time making this and it only took about 1.5 hrs total, 12 screw, 6 wall anchors, 12 finishing nails, a finishing gun and a screw driver= happy toddler.
Noah loved it and was super excited to put his cars in it. Dis is cool, he kept saying. Loved it. We hung them up in the corner of his room above his road rug. It's functional and beautiful.
